Teachings of Hebrew Wisdom on Diligence and Laziness By: John Cleveland Throughout the Bible, we see the importance of being diligent in our walk with Christ as oppose to falling asleep and becoming lazy. As followers of Christ, we know that by applying the knowledge given to us from the Bible can have a profound impact on our lives. When we study Gods Word, we receive wisdom and we are then able to use this wisdom in our daily lives. However, if we choose to not be diligent in our walk with Christ, then we could possibly backslide as a result of being lazy and falling into deeper sin. In this essay we will look at what the Hebrew teachings say about diligence as oppose to being lazy regarding our following of Christ. In†¦show more content†¦If we continue to look in the Book of Proverbs, we will find that Solomon also teaches us a lot about the results that can be expected from being lazy in our walk with God. When we become lazy in our lives, we open the doors for negative consequences to arise. According to Hindson and Yates, â€Å"th e contrast between wisdom and folly is often a contrast between righteousness and wickedness.† (2012, 263) What good is having knowledge only to never apply it in our daily lives? The ways of laziness only lead to trouble and bad consequences. Being lazy is unproductive and this can lead us away from the things that God has called us to do. Solomon states, â€Å"listen, my son, and be wise, and set your heart on the right path: do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags.† (Proverbs 23:19-21) If we choose the laziness lifestyle, then this can lead to poor choices that will have negative impacts in our lives. Solomon teaches us the importance of being diligent and what all it can lead to. Diligence leads to abundance and positive outcomes for our lives. It helps us to live right and avoid things that will bring us down. Introduction This paper basically attempts to identify and critically examine the role of a multi-party system in Ethiopia. Besides laying emphasis on the role of multi-party system in Ethiopia, it discusses the notion of what a multi-party system is, the distinctiveness it has and outlines the countries in which it is put into effect. Furthermore, this paper compares the multi-party system that exists in Ethiopia with other nations that currently endorse the system and highlights the compounding problems which hamper the consolidation and furtherance of a truly competitive multi-party democracy in Ethiopia. Before delving deeper into the issue at hand, it is only necessary to clarify the accepted definition of political parties in general  and multiparty system in specific. This, we shall provide in the later section. This short paper has the following parts. The first part will be an introduction, the second part discusses the meaning and the conception of the multiparty system in the world, the third part attempts to identify and critically examine the role of multiparty system in Ethiopia.1 Finally, in the last part of the paper a conclusion is made. The meaning of Multi-party is very much related to democracy. Some convincing definitions of Multi-party system are: A multi-party system is a political system where the various ideas and points of views of the society are represented by respective political parties which are equally given chances of fully exercising the opportunity to gain control over government offices and participate in political issues. A multi-party system is a political system that is inclusive in its participation and contains a leveled playing field to all political parties as well as provides an independent regulatory system that checks the imbalance of power and influence in each of its legitimate political parties. A multi-party system can be defined system of government in which more than two2 political parties truly have chances and capacities to gain real political and government power. A multi-party system can also be described as a political system where political parties, organized based on their own views, ideas and values, are given the opportunities to be elected by citizens and have the right to participate in government offices representing the different views of the people. The pertinence of the Multi-party system was expressed by John Stuart Mill as, A party of order or stability, and a party of progress or reform, are both necessary elements of a healthy state of political life. There are many misconceptions concerning the definitions of multi-party and two- party  systems. The prominent one includes mistaking two party system for a multiparty system on the basis of the number of parties involved. Nevertheless, a two-party system is a different government system in which only two political parties have a serious chance of claiming executive power even though there are other existing parties. History and Conception of Multi -party System Human beings constitute a major resource of a country. It is also true that human beings naturally differ from one another in their views and outlooks. As long as there are opportunities that can accommodate the different outlooks of human beings for the common good of all, the different outlooks will certainly make a good asset for the social, economic and political transformation of a society. The role multi-party system can play in this regard is quite immense. Actually using various outlooks for a common good was the underlying principle behind the conception of multi-party system in the world. Though Ethiopia has relatively longer history in elections, which was believed to have started almost a century ago, at the time of the monarchy, the concept of multi-party system is just an infant on its knees3. The country had generally been characterized by absence of accommodating various outlooks for almost all of its history. As a result of that grim reality, the country was characterized by protracted civil wars, which were basically the off-shots of different outlooks that could have peacefully been resolved, had there been multi-party system in the country. The very concept of Multi-party system came to life in Ethiopia in Ginbot 20, 1983 Ethiopian Calendar, which is after the time EPRDF overthrew the tyranny invoking military regime known as the Dergue and controlled the country. After the Dergue was overthrown, the first round table discussion among various political forces and scholars from in and outside Ethiopia defeated the one rule and joined hands to establish a better advance known as the Transitional Government of Ethiopia (TGE) which led to the adoption of the TGE Charter in Sene 1983 Ethiopian Calendar. This charter has made a revolutionary chronology in the birth of the Multi-party System. Then the consolidation of the infant Multi-party system stepped ahead through the  establishment of the Electoral Commission with the proclamation number 11/1984 as per provision of charter of transitional period. It was independent and non partisan. This aided to make the election process a fair and free one; a perfect weapon for a perfect cause. The Commission undertook one of its assignments in the election of the constitutional assembly in Hidar, 1987. This assembly constituting 510 participants was crucial in adoption of the constitution of Ethiopia and in the emergence of Multi party system. In the adopted constitution, it was wisely put that any citizen has the right to gather, form a political group, to elect and be elected if preferred by the mass. Nonetheless, there were such promising foundations of Multi-party democracy, some doubt the intensification of a truly competitive multi-party democracy in Ethiopia ever since, beyond the proliferation of political parties.4 The Role of Multi-party System in Ethiopia Though the experiences in countries like Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark and Germany with long tradition of multi-party system have shown stable and successful governments, Multi-party system can still have some side effects on the existence of highly fluid party politics. For that reason, the role of multi-party system in Ethiopia shall be treated in two foremost and easy ways. Positive Roles in the Context of Ethiopia A multi-party system prevents the leadership of a single party from controlling a single legislative chamber without challenge. The domination of a legislative by the ruling party (the one that won majority of seats in the parliament) particularly in countries advocating the parliamentary form of government, like Ethiopia, is a challenging dilemma, since proclamations which doesnt have support and acceptance among the people can easily be ratified without any challenge or opposition. For this not to occur, there need to be a lot of political parties in the game. How many such political parties is a problematic issue but in the long run, some three or four; bigger and more or less ideologically cohesive and with comparable political weight need to exist if there is going to be a multi-party election with alternative choices to the voter. A multi-party system promotes  coalition-building skills while discouraging polarization. It is lucid that if there are multiple parties, each with less than a majority of vote, the parties are strongly motivated to work together to form working governments. The regroupings of the political parties of Ethiopia usually made at the height of elections in the form of coalitions, unions and fronts etc in an effort to pull joint strength is the reason for the usual decrease in number of the contesting parties than the legally registered ones. A multi-party system encourages the general constituency (electorate) to form multiple distinct, officially recognized groups, generally called political parties. Unlike a single-party or two-party system, a multi-party system leans towards encouraging the formation of political parties. In Ethiopia, this might have been achieved by the establishment of the Electoral Commission with the proclamation number 11/1984 as per the provision of the Charter of the transitional period. Side Effects of Multi-party system in Ethiopia Even if Multi-party system is suitable for parliamentary form of government and representative democracy, some still argue that Multi-party system imposes negative influences. These side effects of Multi-party system in Ethiopia will be briefly discussed in the following manner. The ruling party or other ones may cause inflationary disequilibrium by making tall promises to the voters. As Multi-party system factually proliferates the number of political parties which are either legally registered or contesting (or both), it creates a tight competition which may lead them to speak unattainable developmental promises to the electorate just for the sake of obtaining the majority vote. In the long run, the failure to attain the tall promises might, finally, result in discontent among the people which in turn might lead to political instability due to aggressive oppositions. This is the true case in Ethiopia, where most parties cant walk the talk.5 The existence of multiple political parties propounds an irresponsible opposition. The existence of manifold political parties multitude of   ideologies more likely leads to unstable tension and opens a door for irresponsible opposition as a result of hatred and enmity. This case is profoundly observed in Ethiopia where some political parties oppose pertinent policies set by the ruling party just for the sake of opposing. This stance of these political parties contribute to the absence of real choices in multiparty elections which is nearly the same as committing a suicide. It creates a problems lack of cohesion in coalitional form of government, which at times create political uncertainty/instability. Even though a multiparty system encourages coalition building by parties to pull a joint strength, it can also lead, in the meantime, to lack of cohesion as one stand which consecutively leaves a country in an ocean of great chaos and instability. 6 A multi-party system delays the ratification of final policies specifically in a parliamentary form of government because of the difficulty in securing majority of votes. The existence of comparable seats among different and opposing political parties in the parliament, leads to difficulty of securing majority of votes which slows down the ratification process. This is not currently a predicament in Ethiopia, since the majority of the seats of the House of Peoples Representatives are occupied by the single ruling party, though it could be one dilemma if opposition parties become competent to win, in the near future. It excludes smaller parties from fair representation, in a sense that a party which wins, approximately, say, 10 percent of the votes should win approximately 10 percent of the legislative seats. But this doesnt happen to be the case in the pattern. It can encourage the development of political parties based on clan, ethnicity or region, which may base their campaigns and policy platforms on conceptions that are attractive to the majority of people in their district or region but exclude or are hostile to others. This ongoing problem of multi-party system is not noticeable in Ethiopia as compared to other African countries like Malawi and Kenya.7 Conclusion There is a growing interest and willingness in Ethiopia to experience a vibrant, truly competitive Multi-party system. Indeed, a Multi-party system could play positive and constructive role in Ethiopias quest for good governance and democratization. The democratic function of the multi-party system lies in its capacity to accommodate the different outlooks of people for the common good of all where the different outlooks will certainly make a good asset for the social, economic and political transformation of a society. Even if the experience of Ethiopian multi-party system is limited, examining the roles of multi-party system in the democratization of the country is crucially important. In fact when we consider the negative roles of Multi-party system in the political development of Ethiopia, we will be led to lay our hope on prospect of national unity and cooperation. The fruition of hope that we put on, however, needs our capability of addressing some of the most important challenges that Multi-party democracy faces today such as lack of internal democracy, weak and divided opposition parties, fragmentation on ethnic and religious cleavages and others.

These words that have been believed and honored for centuries. Blacks have attempted to change these discriminative views of White Americans for many years. As an African American born in the United States I have witnessed and experienced several instances of racism and discrimination. White Americans have always wanted to control and manipulate the minds Black America. I know first hand that African Americans are still enslaved in America today.Slavery marked the beginning the tribulations they have encountered from the moment they arrived in America. Africans were captured and brought to America against their wills. Once they were loaded of the ships they were handcuffed and displayed like commodities. He was cut off from hi African past, with no hope for the future. With no rights to protect him. Americans were fr ee to treat them how they saw fit. This usually included physical punishment. Slavery required docility. Punishment was carefully planned out to instill terror and break the Africans' spirit. They had to be fit for hard work. Inflicting the slaves with brutal beatings would provide so much more than just punishment. Dehumanization, submission, rigid discipline, inferiority and dependence were just some of the wanted effects. Who would ever guess that it would come back to haunt them later? White Americans owned slaves for over two hundred years. Although some of these slaves tried to revolt and runaway, it didn't have much impact on the situation. On January 1,1863, Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation freeing all the slaves that were in states that supported the Confederacy. Portrayal Of American Upper Middle Class Teenagers Film Studies Essay I decided to write my mini extended essay on the issue of the portrayal of American upper middle class teenagers in cinema, because it is personally relevant to me, it provides insights about teens lives and how teens deal with issues, and I enjoy watching teen movies. Recently, I watched a film from a series of very popular teen movies that portrayed teens as vampires and wolves and I wondered to myself if the way teens are portrayed on the silver screen has been the same over the past few decades, the 80s, the 90s and the 00s. And if the way teens are portrayed in the movies is an accurate portrayal of upper middle class teens actual lives in America. The number of teen movies, a key demographic for movie makers, is very large, so I first had to narrow my choices. I decided to focus on three movies from each decade, but I also recognized that I could not just select any three teen movies. I wanted to select teen movies that in some way portrayed teen life in those years. I used a list of the 50 most popular teen movies of all time to select some of the most popular teen movies of these decades with the thought that the popularity of these movies, primarily with the teen audiences, would indicate that the movies actually spoke to teens. I chose the following movies: 1980s: The Breakfast Club (1985), Risky Business (1983), Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) 1990s: Never Been Kissed (1999), American Pie (1999) and Clueless (1995) 2000s: Mean Girls (2004), Napoleon Dynamite (2004), Superbad (2007) The areas I will examine in terms of teen lifestyle are: parent-teen relationships, peer relationships, romantic relationships (sexuality and romantic love), and coming of age (issues of identity and overall maturity). The analysis focuses on the continuity and change in the depiction of these issues over the three decades of movies. The Portrayal of Parent- Teen relationships across the decades Parents play a vital role in a teenagers life and should be portrayed in teen films. The 80s through the three films showed uninvolved or uninterested parents in regards to their teenager, in matters outside of school. In the Breakfast Club all of the five teenagers had parents that only cared about grades, sports, money or didnt care at all. Teenagers in the 80s also put an effort to separate from his/her parents. In Risky Business (1983) a teenage boy has a weekend free from his overbearing parents. When his parents go out of town we see Tom Cruises character, Joel, partying, smoking, driving his dads Porsche, courting a hooker named Lana and fighting with her pimp. In this movie both of Joels parents are presented as the overly demanding type. In the five minute encounter between Joel and his parents at the beginning of the movie we hear his mother tell him to retake the SATs over again because his scores werent high enough. Then his father scolds him for touching his stereo but n ot putting it back exactly as it was before, followed by the familiar phrase, My house, my rules. In the end, Joel triumphs and gets into Princeton but through his own ingenuity and not by following the path imposed by his parents. He did it by taking control of his own life, rejecting their values, and taking some risks The 90s portrayed observant parents that were willing to help, but awkward in their interactions. American Pie (1999), the most successful teen movie of the 90s portrayed parents as either very lenient or completely unaware of their son Jims activities (he has sex in his bedroom while they are downstairs). His father understands that his son is interested in sex, but is very awkward in his ways to advise him. In the 00s movies portrayed mixed parenting styles such as, the caring and involved parents or the laissez affaire parents. In Mean Girls Cadys parents were caring and involved in her life, but Reginas mom was more hip and let the girls do what they pleased. In Superbad (2007) and Napoleon Dynamite(2004) parents were not existent and uninvolved. So from the 80s to 00s all three decades showed that teenagers have attitudes and values different from their parents. However, the parental traits that they despised have changed from rigid, conservative, authoritarianism, to ignorant, irresponsible and awkward. In addition, the nature of the struggle has evolved from an external struggle for power to a more internal intellectual journey for the adolescent to accept their parents flaws, to offer forgiveness and to realize that they are not destined to follow in their footsteps. Peer Relationships The teenagers concern with their peers is a theme in found in most teen movies. Regularly presented is the adolescents desire to expose the flawed nature of the high school clique system and to discover the meaning of true friendship. In some movies the basis for popularity is never explicitly presented, it is just noted that some youth are popular, others are not, and that cruelty, and conflict accompany these differences in status. In the Breakfast Club (1985) we see that status divisions are superficial and painful, not only to the unpopular but to the popular kids as well. They resolve in the end to see each other as more than their one dimensional profiles (princess, criminal, basket case, jock and brain). In Never Been Kissed (1999) we see how an undercover reporter rejects her initial friends for popularity but then later realize that popularity is unimportant and that it is better off to be friends that accept her for who she is. The same theme is found in Mean Girls (2004) ( with Cadys character) and in Napoleon Dynamite (2004). In Napoleon Dynamite (2004), the antagonist Napoleon is uninterested in popularity but instead lives by doing what he wants to do. He befriends a Mexican immigrant named Pedro and helps him run for Class president, in doing so he becomes popular. So in the 00s friendship will beat popularity any day. Romantic Relationships and Sexual Activity An interesting theme in teen films is the preoccupation with sex (losing ones virginity in particular) and the presentation of romantic relationships as being much more than sex. Youth in the films watched appear to simultaneously obsess about sex and yet reject it as being all important. Losing ones virginity is perhaps one of the most consistent ideas in teen movies, one that clearly transcends time. One of the central themes in American Pie (1999) is the drive for teenage boys to have sex. However, it isnt always the boys that work so hard to lose their virginity. In Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) Stacy the young and inexperienced teenage girl becomes so preoccupied with losing her virginity that she dates several guys and ends up getting an abortion. While sex did not play a major role in some movies such as The Breakfast Club (1985), Never Been Kissed (1999) and Napoleon Dynamite (2004) most movies repeatedly emphasized the importance of sex and the appropriateness of sex for teenagers: You are 15 years old, What are you waiting for? (Fast Times at Ridgemont High 1982) You are a woman, you are ready for sex! (American Pie 1999) While many movies offered shallow or even silly stereotypes of hormone ridden teenagers, most displayed the more substantive, tender side of teenage love. It appears that American Pie (1999), is known for its crude and immature portrayal of adolescent sexuality (e.g. a teenage boy has sex with an apple pie because his friends described female genitalia as being like warm apple pie). However, even this movie has a few reasonable moments where the boys, who were in a race to lose their virginity, realize that sex isnt as important as they made it out to be. They also come to understand the importance of honesty, discretion, and true feelings in not only a relationship but sexual activity as well. In general, whether sex is presented or not, characters repeatedly emphasize the importance of finding a love interest that is based on real compatibility and commitment. This theme is also found in Clueless (1995) and Never Been Kissed (1999) Coming of Age (issues of identity and overall maturity) In all movies teens struggle with challenges that often symbolize the leap to maturity. However, the most notable change in the coming of age theme is the sense of accomplishment. In earlier films the challenge presented is usually met with the implication that an important step toward adulthood had been taken. However, in more recent films there is considerably less clarity in whether the teenager made a transition from adolescent to adult. In some cases it was made clear that the transition to adulthood had not occurred but rather concludes with the question, Whats the hurry? In these instances the realization is that adulthood shouldnt be forced at such a young age. Here we see indications of the extension of adolescence and social acceptance of delayed maturity. Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) displays a mixture of the pursuit of adult status combined with the message that it is perhaps an unrealistic and hard to achieve goal for teenagers. In Fast Times, the teenagers repeatedly try to be adults and engage in what they consider to be adult behaviors. Brad works hard to have responsibility at a fast food restaurant because he wants to feel grown up. Stacy wants to have sex so she can be a woman. Throughout the film we see youth struggling to be adults even though their efforts are presented as misguided and in some cases silly. In the end they come to some decisions about themselves. Most become successful (e.g. Brad becomes assistant manager when he foils a stick up). In addition, Stacy proclaims in the end, I finally figured it out! as she relays that she doesnt want just sex but a more meaningful romantic relationship. While the youth display a sense of accomplishment the way their efforts are presented, and even the title, Fast Times suggest that maybe these teens are trying to grow up too fast. This perspective becomes the normal view of adolescence presented in the movies from the 1990s on. In American Pie (1999) two youth agonize over how to answer the college entrance exam question What is your most emotionally significant moment? The girl says How am I supposed to know what my most emotionally significant moment is? I have no idea what I want to doà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦Thank God, I thought I was the only one. In another scene in American Pie the boys acknowledge their confusion about what they want and where they are going. One boy says, I dont know what Im doing, but the movie ends happily as they all agree they arent supposed to know. They say, You cant plan everything and then they toast to right now and the next step. Plots regularly talked about how you cant control things, cant plan, things never work out the way you expect so why bother? The youth try to embrace this venture into the unknown and tie it into their decision to pass on identity closure. They dont know who they are but that is all right. On a Side Note: The portrayal of drug usage such as alcohol, marijuana and tobacco. In the 80s there seemed to be common casual use of alcohol and tobacco in every type of setting but marijuana use was uncommon or experimental. In the Breakfast Club (1985) the teens smoked the weed that the criminal had brought, for the other teens, this was their first time. They used weed as a way to relax and bond but it was obvious that they dont usually encounter weed. The use of tobacco could really be noted as common in these films also. In Risky Business (1983) almost all characters smoked cigarettes occasionally. In the 90s the use of alcohol and tobacco stayed casual but marijuana transformed from a experimental drug to a more widely used recreational drug. This can be seen in Clueless (1995) during one of the house party scenes where the main character Cher casually smokes a marijuana cigarette offered by a classmate. The 00s portrayed many changes in drug use, alcohol became much harder to obtain and tob acco use turned unpopular, however marijuana use is still prevalent. In Superbad (2007) the antagonists have to resort to using fake identification and stealing to acquire alcohol for a friends party. Another commonality that I noted in these teen movies across the decades, are topics that they did not deal with. These include topics such as violence, suicide and death, teen pregnancy and parenthood, drug addiction, financial difficulties and other serious situations. These films deal with well-off upper middle class teens with plenty of opportunities, limited by their own insecurities. Conclusion

Bush's Speech to the Nation: Regaining Confidence On September 11 2001, the American public's image of continental security was shattered in the form of terrorist hijacked passenger planes slamming first into the world trade center towers in New York and then the Pentagon in Washington DC. America prior to the incident had been a peaceful unsuspecting economic giant. "Americans have known wars -- but for the past 136 years, they have been wars on foreign soil, except for one Sunday in 1941" (Bush par.11). The week following the suicide jet liner attacks found Americans filled with anger, fear, and a missing sense of direction. The public was at a complete loss concerning why the tragic act occurred and the steps that were being taken to overcome it. Only nine days after the attack, the public got its answers in the form of a presidential speech given from the capitol building in Washington DC. On September 20 2001, President George W. Bush's speech regained the public's confidence by speaking of justice, public safety, and unity. The most predominant strategy Bush uses to gain civic confidence is letting the public know justice will be delivered: "Our grief has turned to anger, and anger to resolution. Whether we bring our enemies to justice, or bring justice to our enemies, justice will be done" (par.5). This quote from Bush gives insight into why justice is an important topic for bringing America alive. Knowing the public is enraged and has revenge on its' mind, Bush shows a similar determination. In doing so, he reassures society that vengeance is on the right path. Bush makes the ultimate demands on the network of terrorist believed to be responsible, creating confidence from the publics desire for retribution: "Close immediately and permanently every terrorist training camp in Afghanistan, and hand over every terrorist, and every person in their support structure, to appropriate authorities. (Applause.) Give the United States full access to terrorist training camps, so we can make sure they are no longer operating. These demands are not open to negotiation or discussion"(par.21). According to former FBI agent G. Gordon Liddy, these requests are successful at reassuring the public because unconditional surrender is a convincing way to communicate to Americans that the President means business: "General U.S. 'Unconditional Surrender' Grant received unconditional surrender from General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Court House to end America's bloodiest war. Such was never the goal in Vietnam or the Gulf War.
